You rarely get told when an AI shaped a decision about you. Here are the signs — and a simple test to find out.
Most of the time, no one announces it. Your loan is declined, your CV never reaches a human, your case sits lower in a queue, your feed quietly narrows — and somewhere in the process, an AI system helped decide. A person may still have signed off. But the real work of deciding happened earlier, out of sight.
We call this condition synthocracy: humans stay formally in charge while AI increasingly shapes what they see, trust, and approve. Its everyday form is what some call soft synthocracy — not a robot in charge, but a human who confirms a choice an algorithm already narrowed.
How do you tell it’s happening to you? A few signs:
- You’re given a decision, but no reason you can check — just an outcome or a score.
- The person delivering it can’t change it, only relay it.
- There’s no way to see what data or criteria were used.
- Appealing sends you back to the same system.
- Opting out of the automated path costs you time, access, or standing.
None of this means AI shouldn’t be involved. It often makes things faster and fairer. The problem starts when its involvement becomes invisible and unaccountable — when you can’t see it, question it, or stop it.
