FUTURES

Futures

The Synthocracy Institute stands on two legs. One is research: grounded, empirical, tested against the present. The other is Futures — our foresight strand, where we explore the paths the relationship between human decision-making and AI could take over years and decades.

Everything on this strand is foresight, not forecast. It is scenarios, thought experiments, and provocations — argued carefully, but never presented as established fact. We keep it visibly separate from our research for one reason: the credibility of what we can demonstrate should never be borrowed by what we can only imagine — and the freedom to imagine should never be limited to what we can currently prove.

Why an institute does foresight

Naming synthocracy is only the first move. The harder work is seeing where it could lead — because a future is far easier to prepare for, or to prevent, while it is still one option among many.

Foresight widens the field of the thinkable before it narrows into the seemingly inevitable. Done honestly, it is not fortune-telling. It is structured imagination in the service of better decisions today — and serious research institutes have always used it. What makes it responsible is not caution about the ideas, but honesty about their status.

What lives here

  • Scenarios — near-term and long-horizon paths for AI-mediated decision-making: the futures worth preparing for, and the ones worth preventing.
  • Long questions — how agency, legitimacy, and the human role might change across decades, including from vantage points that are not human-centred. This strand is deliberately unafraid of the large, strange, and distant question.
  • Speculative work, including our Books — which belong to this register. Read them as philosophy and foresight, not as the Institute’s empirical claims. → Books

The standard we hold it to

Foresight here is disciplined in its own way: internally coherent, openly argued, and honest about its own uncertainty. It earns its place by feeding the research strand with questions worth investigating.

But it is the research strand — not this one — where claims are tested against evidence. When you read a Futures piece, read it as an invitation to think, not a prediction to believe. If a Futures idea proves out in plain, checkable terms, it graduates: it crosses over and becomes research.

Two legs, kept distinct

→ For grounded, present-tense work — methods, evidence, and policy — see Research and Insights. → For the speculative corpus, read in the foresight register, see Books.

Foresight is not the opposite of rigour. It is rigour pointed at what has not happened yet — and labelled honestly as such.
