ABOUT
Meta title: About | Synthocracy Institute Meta description: An independent institute on power, legitimacy, and accountability as AI enters real decisions. Our mission, our approach, and the two strands of our work.
Who we are
The Synthocracy Institute is an independent, non-profit research institute. We study, monitor, and explain how decision-making power changes as it passes through AI systems — and we work to keep that power visible, contestable, and answerable to the people it affects.
We are registered in Warsaw and we work internationally, in English, with researchers, practitioners, and partners around the world.
Our mission
To make the relocation of decision-making power — through models, agents, and platforms — legible and contestable, in language that travels across the people who can act on it.
What we are, and what we are not
We are a research institute, not a movement and not a vendor. We don’t sell certainty about AI, and we don’t claim hidden knowledge. We do careful, public, citable work, and we say plainly where our evidence ends and our forecasting begins.
Two strands of work
The research strand is grounded in the present: how decisions flow through AI today, what the live rules require, and what practical accountability looks like. It produces evidence, tools, and policy work.
The futures strand looks ahead: structured foresight on the paths societies could take as AI moves deeper into decision-making. We label this work clearly as foresight, and we hold it to its own honest standard — it informs the research strand, but never poses as established science.
How we work
We translate. If an idea can’t be explained to an intelligent outsider in plain language, we keep working until it can. We convene rather than preach. And we treat our own independence — including our funding — as something to be shown, not asserted.
